Confessions

1. This is one of my favourite confessions from Common Worship

Jesus says, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.’
So let us turn away from our sin and turn to Christ,
confessing our sins in penitence and faith.

Most merciful God,
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
we confess that we have sinned
in thought, word and deed.
We have not loved you with our whole heart.
We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.
In your mercy
forgive what we have been,
help us to amend what we are,
and direct what we shall be;
that we may do justly,
love mercy,
and walk humbly with you, our God.

Amen.

May the God of love and power
forgive you and free you from your sins,
heal and strengthen you by his Spirit,
and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord.

Amen.

2. Confession from the 1662 prayer book:

Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have wandered and strayed from your ways
like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.
We have offended against your holy laws.
We have left undone those things
that we ought to have done;
and we have done those things
that we ought not to have done;
and there is no health in us.
But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us sinners.
Spare those who confess their faults.
Restore those who are penitent,
according to your promises declared to mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord.
And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may live a disciplined, righteous and godly life,
to the glory of your holy name.

Amen.

3. A confession written in response to a series of sermons on the Epistle of James (Summer 2007)

Heavenly Father, word of life
When we treat our words lightly
When we are partial and prejudiced
When our words inflame rather than bring peace
Lord have mercy

When we fail to tame our tongues
And our words are not filled with grace and love
When we praise you, yet insult our brothers
When our words wound and corrupt
Lord have mercy

When our words are proud and self seeking
When we convey envy and ambition
instead of mercy and sincerity
When our humor is hurtful instead of joyful
Lord have mercy.

Grant us that heavenly wisdom,
That we might live as your people,
That we might bring peace and harvest righteousness.
And see your Kingdom come

Amen
